Discover the six forces that tell your brain where to direct your attention.
The Salience Network functions as a “spotlight operator” that helps determine where your attention goes moment by moment. It helps identify incoming information as salient(or deserving of your attention) because it is:
- New or unexpected
- Connected to a goal or opportunity
- Potentially threatening
- Intense or loud
- Tied to a craving or desire
- Emotional
In the SOS Mind framework, these features form the Focus Code: Novelty, Opportunity, Threat, Intensity, Craving, and Emotion (NOTICE).
Salience does not come only from the outside world.
A notification, breaking-news headline, or angry facial expression can capture attention. So can an internal sensation, an anxious thought, a memory, physical discomfort, or a sudden feeling of inspiration.
The Salience Network helps integrate these different streams and prioritize which signals deserve your focus.
This is why attention is not purely rational. What feels urgent, emotional, novel, or personally relevant can overpower what you consciously intended to focus on.
